Abstract

This study aims to see whether there is a relationship between optimism and happiness in mothers who have mentally retarded children. This study uses a quantitative approach with simple random sampling technique. The research sample used was one hundred mother respondents who have mentally retarded children in Lhokseumawe City. The data collection method uses a modified optimism scale from Nirmala which refers to the optimism measurement tool from Seligman and for the happiness scale compiled by the researchers themselves based on aspects of happiness according to Seligman. Data analysis using the product moment technique. The results showed that there is a significant relationship between optimism and happiness in mothers who have  mentally retarded children with a correlation value of  0,593. So it can be concluded that the higher the level of optimism, the higher the level of happiness in mothers who have mentally retarded children, conversely the lower the optimism, the lower the happiness possessed by mothers.
